Banana Chocolate Loaf
I’ve been steadily baking my way through the Butter Baked Goods cookbook, and with the weather being so cold, and noticing my bunch of bananas going downhill, it seemed appropriate to try the recipe for Banana Chocolate Loaf. I’m not typically a huge fan of sweets that incorporate fruit and/or vegetables, I mean why are you trying to sneak that health into my dessert? But when it comes to bananas and baked goods, the two go hand-in-hand, especially when there’s chocolate thrown in the mix. I know what I’ll be having with my morning, mid-morning, and afternoon cup of coffee this Friday.

I know that I’ve spent so much time on the weather lately, but it’s hard to focus on anything else when the winter has been so harsh. There were times in Vancouver where the rain would persist, relentlessly, for days on end, and slowly but surely everyone would eventually succumb to feeling a little bit blue. Even though the sun has shone down, the bitter cold has in fact, made me a little bitter. Thankfully I have a conference to LA next week, and I’m already counting down the minutes. Come on winter, enough is enough, it’s time to take your ball and go home now.

While in many places it’s all ‘spring showers bring May flowers’, but here in Calgary the weather likes to keep us guessing. The first day of spring brought a fresh new layer of snow and frigid temps that allowed me to pull out the fur and coordinating winter accessories. Now it would be a complete fabrication if I said the lingering cold weather wasn’t getting to me, but I’m trying to keep a positive spin on it. At this rate spring skiing will take us right into June, and by then, I think we all know how sophisticated my aprés ski routine will be, in both ensembles and cocktails.

In our family I’ve always been the designated ‘fashion-expert’ over my older sister. I try to push her outside of her comfort zone to try new things, I rip through her closet and toss what’s expired, and inform her of what she should be purchasing for the next season. So it was with great pride that she was the one to tell me about a fab new pair of denim that I had to have. Together we went, each buying a pair of seriously amazing boyfriend jeans, celebrating with lunch after the fact. I think it’s safe to say the student may be outgrowing the teacher…love that girl.

I love the transition from winter to spring. I love clearing out my closet of the wool, long sleeve, double layered, dark-colored items and replacing them with everything light and airy. I love that while it may be too cold yet to go without a light weight coat, it’s not too frigid to get away with a pair of pumps in place of boots. The days are longer, the sun is stronger, and there’s a sense of possibility in the air. Tell me, how can you not help but to fall in love with this time of year.
